You can technically charge an electric car from an ordinary three-pin socket, but it is slow and it is not a good idea as a regular habit. A standard plug and its wiring were never designed to carry a heavy load for the many hours an EV needs, so drawing that much current continuously can overheat the socket, the plug and the cable behind the wall, which is a genuine fire risk. On top of that a three-pin charge is painfully slow, often taking well over a day to fill a modern battery from low. A dedicated home charger runs on its own protected circuit built for the job, charges several times faster and shuts off safely if anything goes wrong.
That is why we always recommend a proper home charge point rather than relying on a plug. We install EV chargers across Harrow, Edgware, Stanmore, Watford and the wider North West London area, checking your incoming supply and consumer unit first so the charger is fitted safely on a circuit of its own. We advise on the right charger for your car and how you drive, keep the cable run neat and discreet, and the whole installation is tested and certified.
Why a plug is not enough
A three-pin socket is not built for hours of heavy load, so it charges slowly and can overheat the plug, socket and cable.
A circuit of its own
A dedicated charger runs on its own protected circuit, so it charges faster and never overloads the rest of the house.
Checked, fitted, certified
We check your supply first, fit the charger neatly and test and certify the whole installation before we leave.
Your questions, answered
Is it dangerous to charge an EV from a three-pin plug?
Occasionally, in a pinch, with a proper EV cable, it is manageable. As a daily routine it is risky, because ordinary socket wiring is not designed to carry that load for hours and can overheat. A dedicated charge point removes that risk.
How much faster is a home charger?
A typical 7kW home charger fills a battery several times faster than a three-pin plug, usually turning an overnight charge into a full one. We advise on the right unit for your car and how you drive.
Can my home take an EV charger?
Almost always, yes. We check your incoming supply and consumer unit first and tell you straight if anything needs upgrading before the charger goes in, rather than finding out on the day.
