What Are the Signs a House Needs Rewiring?

A house rarely needs rewiring out of the blue, it tells you first. The clearest signs are old rubber, lead or cloth-covered cables that have gone brittle, a fuse board with rewireable fuses rather than modern breakers, and sockets that buzz, feel warm, scorch or spark. Add in frequent tripping, lights that dim when a big appliance kicks in, and too few sockets so extension leads are trailing everywhere, and the wiring is very likely past its best. As a rule of thumb, a home that has not been rewired in the last thirty to forty years is worth having checked.

None of these on its own proves you need a full rewire, which is exactly why we test before we quote. We rewire homes right across Harrow and North West London, from the Victorian terraces of South Harrow and the 1930s semis of North Harrow and Rayners Lane to family houses in Edgware, Stanmore and Watford, so we know the wiring each era tends to hide. We look the installation over, tell you honestly whether the whole house or just certain circuits need doing, and every circuit we rewire is tested and certified to the current 18th Edition wiring rules.

We test before we quote

A proper inspection tells you whether it is a full rewire, a few circuits or nothing at all, so you are not sold work you do not need.

Signs you can spot

Old cloth or rubber cables, a rewireable fuse board and warm or scorched sockets are the usual giveaways that wiring is past its best.

Certified to standard

Every circuit we rewire is tested and certified to the current 18th Edition rules by a NAPIT-registered electrician.

Your questions, answered

How old does wiring have to be before it needs replacing?

There is no fixed expiry date, but wiring installed more than thirty to forty years ago often predates modern safety standards and materials. If your home still has its original cabling and fuse board from that era, it is worth having it inspected.

Can you rewire just part of the house?

Often, yes. Not every home needs the full job, and plenty only need certain circuits or areas updating. We test first and quote for what genuinely needs doing, whether that is the whole house or a handful of circuits.

Are scorched or warm sockets dangerous?

They can be. Warmth, browning or a burning smell around a socket usually points to a loose or overloaded connection, which generates heat and is a real fire risk. Stop using it and have it looked at rather than waiting.
